Advancing Literacy recommends an array of foundational skills assessments in order to gain a broader understanding of students’ progress and needs. Teachers of early readers and writers will likely want to gather information about students’ concepts about print and letter sound identification. Then, too, once students are reading and writing, assessments of high frequency word knowledge, phonological awareness, phonics decoding, and spelling are also important.
